Melted series

I conducted two sessions, using a toaster maker, to melt, actually slow melting via, an oven would have created a more desirable melted mould, but due to OH&S, I didn’t investigate it further.

Straw series

The straws were photographed on two occasions one within a studio setting a perspex box, and the second using the sunlight, outdoors.

Assemblages Misc Series

At the start of the semester I collected found objects for the making of curiosity and assemblages. These are the works that came out of them before I turned my concentrations to plastic series.

L series

Using objects that start with the letter L, this series a photo shoots allowed me to surrender to the process, as keeping things still was not going to be an option.

Lid series

I wanted to make the lids look like they were deep beneath the water so I had to block all of the light out, the other experiment was attempting to melt them together to create an abstract effect. I was not excited by these photos.

PROCESS

The bottle caps I didn’t want any light because I wanted to get the impression that they were what the fish were seeing. Currently in the ocean the amount of plastic goes down kilometres in depth which is killing a lot of the micro species because it doesn’t get the sunlight.
One of the ice blocks which contains crushed objects from the destruction series
Found objects were taken to be squashed, The space was harsh and I ended up using a flash for a lot of this work and a mirror to really try and capture a stark reality to the waste problem
One of the melted works using mirrors to try and capture the continuation of a major problem going on and on and on
One of the ice blocks series, trying to get this particular ice block out was a problem. Some of the shapes and textures were fantastic during the photo shoot I continued and what we’re doing to this planet, to think about icebergs and all of the plastic stuck inside them
This was one of the first few ice blocks I use the Perspex box and mirrors problems that I came up with were the condensation on the box and reflection this one was everything starting with L
Also during the squash series, it didn’t allow me to have control over the environment, harsh bright sun ended up influencing the process of these photos which I on reflection was ok because as a child I would always go to the tip with my father and it reminded me of this bright sunlight beaming down on all the rubbish.
I purchased this little toaster for the melting process when it arrived it was very tiny so I didn’t extend on the melting series too much also because of the fumes involved in helping plastic I wasn’t keen on, if I had more time I would really like to melt in different ways rather than Cook but and have to know when to stop…
Found objects being crushed.
Beast of a machine, so poingnant to impact of plastic on planet!
Photographing ice blocks outdoors this was the second photo shoot trying a different technique not using a studio set, just using light from behind
Attempting to counter weight the perspex box with ice and water above the mirror for photos, to get the appearance of submerged ice blocks
Found on the side of the road emptied it and used it as a assemblage with a small narrative
Ended up doing three photo shoots with straws, this was from the tray under the freezer before I purchased a bigger freezer it was a very skinny ice block, which ended up breaking and falling apart.
Using some of the original objects one of my last photo shoots with the melting series, it’s been an interesting process and throughout this is the first time I feel like I’ve been able to make the objects ugly. Which I really liked because I’m trying to get across that it’s all shiny a new, they come in bright colours that entice everyone, but at the end of the day it’s rubbish and it’s really bad to the environment.

Start of an idea 3rd of May 2020

On collecting front found items I started to sort and come up with ideas for some of the assemblages this was one of the first ideas it consisted of the shape of the skipping rope creating it into a snail and then having the discarded pink plastic party little girl stuff to follow, much like a snail trail. Then from that I went down the path of creating or thinking about the legacy of children and the legacy of what we’re doing with what we’re buying and using so I extended and designed a little boy legacy with a lot of blue materials and made it a shape of a gun. This feels like it’s been the longest semester in history because of all of the drama that has been dragged along with it so I may be repeating myself but I just wanted to start with a description, phase, series of photo shoots to submit. From the multiple of items collected I started to come to the realisation that I had to figure out how to connect it all and assemble these items although I collected A lot of stuff nature, plastic, metal, what really did stand out was that I was attracted to bright colours and plastic so from that you can see below in this picture that majority of it is plastic and from the Pictures in the past blogs.

Ideas around assembling the assemblages

This is where changes started to happen with the work because I came to the realisation that I didn’t want to use more plastic ideas formed from previous blogs mention around freezing, squashing, melting, submerging, and assembling.

The next series of posts will be series of photo shoots and works they won’t make sense they are not connected the only thing that connects them is the fact that they are found objects and a waste for these works I want the viewer to take into consideration how wasteful we are and what we are doing to the planet OR I want them to develop their own narrative with in the several series of works.
