Net Series (several)
“ We are all caught up in this” using the nets from fruit bags such as passion fruit and oranges, I attempted a series of ice blocks with the plastic found objects. This proved to be difficult because of the melting and the smaller objects. Something that I added to this photo shoot that kept coming up was the addition of the terminology “we are hanging by a thread” parts of the icebock nets were hung with found fishing line and other fine singular material. I also thought that the net was not effective enough, it just looked like another part of the found objects.

Net series 2

This next group is the event of waiting for the frozen ice to melt, the netted bunch of plastic was falling all over the place, it was hung with found plastic silver streamers and slowly turned like the revolving world we live in. I like the term Citrus, for this group because it may pose a juxtaposition.

This next series was a struggle, I found that the amount of plastic was too much, I could not get the light right so many of the images are over and underexposed. I am old school and light photos to be editied by the settings of the camera rather than having to do a lot of work photo shopping, another reason why I use the bar letting technique. Another thing I don’t like about these images, is the size of the ice cube, it’s too small and has no impact. I think that the use of the ice can mute the intensity of the amount of plastic, or as I have mentioned before giving it some breathing space.

Then next groups of photos are from another hanging, these were the net of Marco plastics, it’s was difficult to capture the size and amount, I tried isolating, I also tried manipulating and addextra plastic which felt funnily enough, like cheating the photograph. This bunch was hung by a fishing line. And the ice melted into this weird shaped block, like an Easter Island statue, so clashing in a bad way. It doesn’t work it’s a what is she trying to do snap shot.

Layers of trouble
Using copy stand techniques, I attempted to later the frozen sculptures in between layers of glass, the first images are showing you the layers and have a presence of their own.

The plastic bundles were a process to continue to attempt to wrap and bind the frozen plastic, however it melted quickly and the layers moved around with the water so it became a precarious shoot, which I had to eventually about to save any broken glass.

Presentation Ideas

Artist research: Matthew Lapenta (Natural Plasticity) JanaCruder(Instagram)

I discovered Jana cruder during my artist research, what has been really important to me is the impact of how people see the work. The shock value the message and the fact that it’s under our noses every single day. On discovering this work I was excited by the fact that by enlarging the objects transformed I straw into a mammoth sculpture such as the problem of waste. Joanna Krupa has done a few installations regarding plastic on waste, she collaborates with her partner … Who works travel the world and are exhibited in buildings, museums and on beaches.

“Art inspires and science can be a part of the solution” Yung Wu, the hope for Lapenta is that is initiates change. “We made it large scale, so they could be made unavoidable” https://www.naturalplasticity.com/
More found objects, toothbrush and balloons
I started fooling around with solo objects rather than the chaos at the end of last semester, so I started melting and freezing single objects. This is two series of the toothbrush, because I felt I could capture the essence of the brush in the first lot, it’s looks more like a leach.

Balloons isolated theme
So balloons are a well know problem (but still a problem), however environmental artists tend to use this subject matter a lot, during my research. So I wanted to extend on last semester and attempt to make it ugly. By doing this I attempted to melt, freeze and photograph as a melded piece (what I would have loved as a final sculpture). So after photographing the balloon series, it has now become my lease favourite, it’s like the ugliness repulses me, the images are too busy and ugly, go figure. There is still could and they are still visual, however I need to continue past this and try different materials as I collect.

We are all bound, We are all linked,
The straws bond series turned out well, I thought the images were really impactful and would love to have used one of these as my final work, however the linked straws worked better in the space and with the ice sculptures
Kylie Naylor, Straws linked I, 2020, image, found objects, brush cutting cord and straws, frozen, photograph, Sydney, Australia.

There ended up being a total of four photo shoots for the linked straws, I tried it in various ways. To capture the infamous one shot. I was really happy with this series, I thought the subject matter photographed really well.

Mouth full

During the process of collecting and shortly after the dummies series, my collection was growing and I fell into a contemplation of all the plastic in the ocean and how much of the plastic is recycled and becomes what we eat. The idea will not be for Cava390 due to time constraints but wanted to note it due to the impact it would create if I could capture much like a collaborative process like the milk moustache or the scream environmental project of people willing to have their picture taken in the name of concern for how much plastic is in the food we eat and the water we drink. Equipment fails
Some of the problems I’m coming up with, are that on my last photo shoot I dropped my camera but is hard to work with ice cause your hands constantly wet and it’s very slippery so it’s a lot of putting the camera down and putting up the work and then picking it up again. On one of these occasions I dropped my camera I thought it had landed on the back screen which I really use so that wasn’t a problem however when I went to use it the lens got stuck it’s warped the lens so now I have to shop around and buy a new one.

Other fails are photos connecting to all devices, I know this is a first world problem, this causes a problem with editing, and sharing for example I’m writing this blog on my phone because I can only get the photos off it. The SIM cards don’t work on my computer so they then get put onto another device and then everything has to be shared. this course is a lot of difficulty when your internet is as slow as the Dark ages.
this may not seem like much have a when you taking thousands of photos and attempting to edit them and look at them on a larger screen it can prove difficult, an example of this is last semesters work took one week full time to edit. I am at the mercy of the internet and technology and it’s something that I really hate, because I would rather be working on the photo shoots.
Sketches of photo compositions
During my walks collecting microplastics along the Shoreline and in the parks toys on the side of the road I’m so many bottle lids! I contemplate and think about ways to capture the mess of things. Here’s some sketches that have been part of my ideas

I felt like I wasn’t really capturing thought I wanted, yes it looks bright and colourful but it’s not really saying anything to me, I put it back in the freezer so I will try again
